Adaptive Triggers
A controller trigger mechanism that uses an electric motor and worm-gear assembly to apply variable physical resistance against the user's finger, programmable per game event.

Aim Assist
A software feature in many games that subtly slows, nudges, or rotates a controller player's aim toward targets to narrow the precision gap with mouse input — activating only in response to the player's own analog-stick movement.

Anti-Deadzone
A software offset, applied in a controller wrapper above XInput, that sets the minimum output value once a stick leaves its deadzone — used to counteract a game's forced deadzone so small physical movements register past it immediately.

Back Paddles
Rear-mounted buttons on premium controllers, accessible via middle fingers without removing thumbs from analog sticks, remappable to existing controller buttons via hardware or software configuration.

Firmware Update
Software patches written to a controller's onboard microcontroller flash memory, updating the firmware code that governs button mapping, sensor reading, Bluetooth pairing, and feature behavior.

Gyro Aim
An input modality that maps the rotational velocity output of a controller's gyroscope (often combined with accelerometer data) onto in-game camera or aim controls, enabling mouse-like precision on a gamepad.

Input Lag
The end-to-end system latency from a physical input action to the corresponding on-screen response, accumulated across controller, operating system, game engine, and display stages.

Micro-Switches
Button switch mechanisms using metal contacts or optical light-beam interruption to register button presses, providing faster actuation and longer lifespan than traditional rubber membrane buttons.

Rumble & Haptic Feedback
An input feedback mechanism using motors or actuators inside a controller to convert digital game-state events into physical vibrations the player feels through their hands.

Wireless Protocol
The radio communication standard a wireless controller uses to send input to a console or PC — 2.4GHz proprietary RF, standard Bluetooth, or a console-specific link — each with different latency, polling-rate ceilings, and feature support.

XInput
Microsoft's controller input API, introduced in 2005 with the Xbox 360, that exposes a controller to a Windows game as a standardized Xbox-layout gamepad — enabling automatic recognition without per-controller mapping, but limited to a fixed layout and four controllers.
