Controller Works on USB but Not Bluetooth

If your controller works through USB but not Bluetooth, first check that the exact model supports Bluetooth on your device. A wireless controller may need its own USB receiver instead. If Bluetooth is supported, charge the pad, disconnect its cable, and follow the model's pairing steps before changing game settings.

Step 0

Diagnose before you fix

Use the wired result as a baseline. The next check is whether Bluetooth connects and delivers the same basic inputs.

Diagnostic tool

Button Test

Confirm a face button and stick respond over USB. Remove the cable, pair using the maker's instructions, then repeat. Note whether the host lists the pad as connected and whether the browser receives any input. These are separate observations.

  • The controller's model number and pairing instructions
  • A charged controller
  • The working USB cable for comparison
The fix

Step by step

Work through these in order. After the last step, run the diagnostic again to confirm the fix held.

  1. 01

Check what wireless means for this model

Look up the full product name, including suffixes such as Wireless, Bluetooth, or PC. A 2.4 GHz USB receiver is not a Bluetooth adapter. If the maker lists receiver-only wireless use, connect that receiver instead of searching the host's Bluetooth list. A wired-only version cannot gain Bluetooth through a setting.

  2. 02

Put the pad into pairing mode, not just power-on mode

Charge the controller, unplug USB, and use its documented pairing button or button combination. A steady light may mean it is trying to reconnect to a saved device, not accept a new one. Temporarily turn off the previous host's Bluetooth if it keeps taking the connection.

  3. 03

If it appears in the list but will not connect, pair again

Remove this controller's saved Bluetooth entry from the host, then add it again while the controller is in pairing mode. On Windows, use Settings, Bluetooth & devices. Remove only the entry you have identified. This clears the saved pairing on that host; it does not fix unsupported hardware.

  4. 04

If it connects but the tester is blank, check the input path

Keep the tester visible and press a controller button. Check that the controller is in the mode intended for this host. Close an extra remapping app for a comparison, preserving its saved profile. If USB still works but Bluetooth input does not, check the maker's firmware notes and the host's Bluetooth support.

  5. 05

If the tester works, move to the game

A working wireless browser test moves the question to game support, input mode, or mappings. Follow the linked guide for a controller that works in the tester but not the game. Also check feature limits: a working Bluetooth connection does not mean USB audio or every advanced effect is available.

  6. 06

If pairing still fails, narrow the host or controller side

Follow the operating system's Bluetooth troubleshooter. Use the PC maker's supported Bluetooth driver if an update is needed. If possible, test the pad on another supported host. Note the model, firmware, host, and exact failure before contacting support. Do not keep resetting unrelated devices.

Where to go next

Choose the path that matches the failure: no pairing, no browser input, or no response in one game. Those symptoms need different checks.

Other tests for the same controller

After pairing, repeat a short button and stick check. Test stability only once basic wireless input works.

Frequently Asked

connection questions

Discovery, pairing, and input are separate stages. Confirm that the device is connected, use the correct host mode, and press a button with the tester visible. Then compare with remapping software paused.

No. A controller can use a dedicated wireless receiver without Bluetooth support. Check the exact version's manual rather than the word wireless on the box.

Follow your model's instructions. For the DualSense pairing procedure, Sony says to disconnect the USB cable first. Other controllers may prioritize USB while it is attached, which can hide whether wireless input works.

It may be reconnecting to a saved host. Use the documented pairing or host-switching steps. Turning off the previous host's Bluetooth temporarily can help you see which host is taking the connection.

Audio support depends on the controller and host. Sony documents a wired connection for the DualSense headset jack on PC and Mac. Losing that feature alone does not prove the Bluetooth input connection has failed.

That is a stability problem after pairing. Use the disconnecting guide and record when the drop occurs. Do not keep repeating first-time pairing steps if the actual fault happens during play.
