Sony regularly releases device-software updates for the standard DualSense and premium DualSense Edge controllers. The problem is that Sony does not maintain a complete public controller firmware changelog.
Its support pages explain how to install the latest update, but they do not provide one historical page showing every version number, hardware branch, release date and controller-specific change. That is why many websites quietly guess what each update did.
This guide does not.
GPadLab separates the firmware versions into three categories:
- Confirmed change: Sony publicly explained the controller feature or improvement.
- Version-only release: The firmware file and version are verifiable, but Sony published no controller-specific notes.
- Archive date: The first date on which the firmware was captured or added to a public archive. This is not necessarily the exact hour Sony began its global rollout.
That distinction matters. A PS5 system update and a controller firmware update may arrive together, but that does not prove every console feature in the update was implemented inside the controller.
What Is the Latest PS5 Controller Firmware?
As of July 23, 2026, there is no single firmware number that applies to every DualSense controller.
| Controller firmware branch | Latest verified version | Status |
|---|---|---|
| DualSense Type 0004 | 0630 | Current |
| DualSense Type 000B | 0630 | Current |
| DualSense Type 000E | 0641 | Current |
| DualSense Edge Type 0044 | 0217 | Current |
These internal “Type” labels identify different Sony firmware branches. They are not retail product names, and a controller on 0630 is not automatically outdated merely because another controller shows 0641. Version 0641 is currently associated with the Type 000E branch, while Types 0004 and 000B remain on 0630.
Direct answer: Open the firmware screen on your own controller. If PlayStation Accessories or the PS5 says no update is available, the controller is current for its hardware branch.

The archive commit history dates firmware 0297 to April 20, 2022, firmware 0307 to September 8, 2022 and the 0356-era update to March 9, 2023.
Sony confirmed that the March 2023 PS5 update introduced wireless DualSense device-software updating, removing the normal requirement to connect the controller with a USB cable for every future PS5 update.
The September 2023 controller files were archived on September 21, shortly after Sony’s September 13 PS5 system rollout. Sony announced accessibility, audio and social improvements for the console, but it did not identify those features as firmware 0402 changes.
Firmware 0458 has the clearest official patch notes of the entire DualSense history. Sony specifically confirmed louder controller-speaker output and improved microphone noise suppression. The global rollout began on March 13, 2024, while the firmware files were added to the tracked archive on March 19.
The PlayStation Accessories rollout on August 27, 2024 allowed Windows users to update standard DualSense firmware and fully customize DualSense Edge settings from a PC. Firmware 0520 and Edge firmware 0200 were subsequently preserved in the archive.
Firmware 0630 delivered the most practically useful DualSense upgrade so far: four saved device slots. Sony detailed this multi-device pairing feature in its official PlayStation Blog system update announcement. Sony began the global rollout on September 17, 2025, and the corresponding 0630 and Edge 0213 firmware files were archived the following day.
Type 000E firmware 0641 was detected and archived on June 10, 2026. The firmware file comes from Sony’s official update server, but no public Sony changelog currently explains what changed between 0633 and 0641.

| 0213 | September 17–18, 2025 | Added registration and switching between as many as four paired devices. | Confirmed change |
| 0217 | October 23, 2025 | Current DualSense Edge firmware. Sony has not published a detailed feature-level changelog. | Version-only release |
The DualSense Edge launched globally on January 26, 2023. Firmware 0113 is the earliest Edge version preserved in the current firmware archive.
Firmware 0180 received the March 2024 speaker and microphone improvements confirmed by Sony for both DualSense models. Firmware 0213 later added four-device pairing, while 0217 replaced it in October 2025 without a public feature breakdown.
What About the 2020 and 2021 DualSense Updates?
Several early DualSense builds and version numbers have circulated since the PS5’s November 2020 launch. The problem is verification.
Sony confirmed that controller updates were released during the early PS5 period, including an update required alongside the September 2021 system release. However, Sony’s public announcements did not consistently identify those updates by controller firmware number.
For that reason, GPadLab should not present an exact 2020–2021 version-to-date table as official fact unless the original Sony files or controller records can be independently verified.
That is less satisfying than publishing a long list. It is also more accurate.
What Do A-0520, B-0520 and Other Firmware Prefixes Mean?
The letter does not mean “alpha,” “beta,” “better” or “newer.”
Sony distributes different firmware files for different internal DualSense hardware or updater branches. The current archive contains separate Type 0004, Type 000B and Type 000E firmware paths.
This means:
- A controller showing A-0630 may be fully updated.
- Another controller may show B-0630 and also be fully updated.
- A Type 000E controller may show 0641.
- You should not force one branch’s firmware onto another controller.
- The correct version is the version offered by the official PS5 updater or PlayStation Accessories app.
The updater decides which file matches the connected hardware.
How to Check the Firmware Version of a PS5 Controller
Check on a PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose Controller (General) for a standard DualSense.
- Open DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
For a DualSense Edge, go to:
Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Device Software
Sony’s official PlayStation controller support documentation confirms that controller updates are delivered alongside PS5 system-software updates and can also be started manually from these menus.
Check on a Windows PC
- Install Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application.
- Connect the controller by USB or supported Bluetooth.
- Select the connected controller.
- Look under Firmware for your controller.
- The app displays the installed version and shows Update when a newer compatible version is available.
PlayStation Accessories supports firmware updates for both DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How to Update a PS5 Controller Without a PS5
A Windows PC can update both the standard DualSense and DualSense Edge.
Use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application rather than a third-party firmware tool. The app detects the connected hardware branch, checks the installed firmware and offers the correct update when one is available.
During the update:
- Do not turn off the PC.
- Do not disconnect the controller.
- Update one controller at a time.
- Use a USB cable capable of carrying data when the controller is not detected correctly.
Sony specifically warns against disconnecting the controller during the firmware process. It also distinguishes “charge and sync” or “charging and data” USB cables from charge-only cables.
Can a DualSense Firmware Update Be Installed on Mac?
Not through Sony’s official updater.
A DualSense can connect to supported macOS devices for gameplay, but Sony’s official firmware-update methods are currently:
- A PS5 console
- A compatible Windows PC using PlayStation Accessories
Sony does not list a macOS firmware updater.
What Changed in Firmware 0630?
Firmware 0630 added four saved pairing slots to compatible standard DualSense controllers. DualSense Edge received the same capability through firmware 0213.
Each action button represents a slot:
| Slot | Button combination |
|---|---|
| Slot 1 | PS button + Triangle |
| Slot 2 | PS button + Circle |
| Slot 3 | PS button + Cross |
| Slot 4 | PS button + Square |
To register a device, hold the chosen action button and PS button for more than five seconds. To switch to a saved device, hold the corresponding combination for about three seconds.
This allows one controller to move between devices such as a PS5, Windows PC, Mac or mobile device without deleting and recreating the Bluetooth pairing each time.
Does Updating PS5 Controller Firmware Fix Stick Drift?
There is no verified basis for promising that a firmware update will repair physical stick drift.
Firmware can change controller processing, compatibility and communication behaviour. It cannot restore a physically worn stick mechanism. Sony’s published controller notes for firmware 0458 covered audio improvements, while firmware 0630 covered multi-device pairing; neither announcement claimed a general stick-drift repair.
Updating remains a sensible troubleshooting step because it eliminates outdated software as a variable. It should not be sold as a guaranteed repair. Before assuming firmware is the cause, run a measured check with the GPadLab controller diagnostic tools to confirm whether the resting stick offset is real hardware drift.
For DualSense Edge owners, Sony supports replacing an individual stick module when the module stops working correctly.
Does PS5 Controller Firmware Improve Battery Life?
Sometimes controller behaviour and charging compatibility can change through software, but Sony has not claimed that every firmware version improves battery life.
Do not confuse PS5 console features such as adaptive controller charging with a confirmed DualSense firmware battery upgrade. Sony introduced adaptive charging as part of a PS5 system update for supported console models, not as a general promise that firmware 0520 or another controller version increased battery capacity.
Battery capacity also declines physically over time. Firmware cannot reverse cell ageing.
Can You Downgrade DualSense Firmware?
Sony does not provide a supported rollback button in the PS5 settings or PlayStation Accessories.
The official workflow checks the connected controller and installs the newest compatible firmware. Manually forcing an older binary can risk installing an incompatible branch or leaving the controller unusable.
For normal users, the practical answer is no supported downgrade method is available. Wait for a newer Sony update or troubleshoot the connection rather than forcing archived firmware.
PS5 Controller Firmware Update Stuck or Failed
Use this order instead of repeatedly restarting the same failed update:
- Charge the controller.
- Restart the PS5 or Windows PC.
- Update the PS5 system software or PlayStation Accessories application.
- Use a different data-capable USB cable.
- Try another USB port.
- Turn the controller off and reconnect it.
- Reset the controller using the recessed button on its rear.
- Retry the update with only one controller connected.
Sony recommends updating both the app and controller, reconnecting the controller and using the rear reset button when behaviour is unexpected. Resetting does not erase pairing or custom profile settings.
If the controller still misbehaves after a successful update, work through the GPadLab controller fix guides for connection, input and hardware-level troubleshooting.
How GPadLab Will Update This Page After the Next Patch
Every future firmware entry should be added at the top of the relevant table and documented using the same format.
Future Patch Entry Template
DualSense Firmware [VERSION] — [RELEASE DATE]
Current status: Latest, replaced or hardware-specific Compatible branch: Type 0004, 000B, 000E or another verified branch Official Sony changes: Exact changes Sony publicly confirmed Unconfirmed claims: Community reports that have not been verified Previous firmware: Version replaced by this update Update method: PS5, PlayStation Accessories or both Known installation issues: Only reproducible or officially acknowledged problems Rollback available: Yes or no GPadLab verification date: Date checked against the official updater Source status: Sony announcement, Sony firmware server or archive capture
Editorial Rules for Future Updates
GPadLab should never:
- Copy the entire PS5 system changelog into the controller patch notes.
- Claim a drift, latency or battery improvement without evidence.
- Assume every controller receives the same version.
- Treat the date a firmware file was archived as unquestionably identical to the global rollout date.
- Describe A, B or Type 000E branches as upgrades over one another.
- Recommend unofficial firmware flashing to general users.
This verification structure is the main difference between a useful firmware database and another page repeating guesses from forums.
Bottom Line
The most important fact is simple: the latest DualSense firmware depends on the controller’s hardware branch.
As of July 23, 2026:
- Type 0004 DualSense: 0630
- Type 000B DualSense: 0630
- Type 000E DualSense: 0641
- DualSense Edge Type 0044: 0217
Firmware 0458 delivered confirmed audio improvements. Firmware 0630 and Edge firmware 0213 added four-device pairing. Several other releases are real and verifiable, but Sony did not publish detailed patch notes for them.
Any website claiming to know a precise performance improvement for every version is filling gaps with assumptions. GPadLab should not do that.
