Wrong Controller Button Prompts on PC
If a PlayStation pad works but the game shows Xbox letters, first check the game’s icon settings. The game may be receiving an emulated Xbox pad through Steam Input or another mapper. If the actions are correct, this is a prompt mismatch, not proof of a faulty button. Keep a working profile before changing the input path.
Diagnose before you fix
Check what the button does before changing what the game calls it. A tester can confirm input, but it cannot choose another game’s icons.
Button Test
Press each face button once and confirm that it responds. Then test the same action in the game. A generic tester label need not match the symbol printed on the pad.

Step by step
Work through these in order. After the last step, run the diagnostic again to confirm the fix held.
- 01
Decide whether the icon or the action is wrong
In a safe menu, press the button used to confirm a choice, then the one used to go back. If the expected action happens but the symbol is wrong, focus on prompts. If the action is wrong too, check the game binding and your saved layout. Do not remap a working action just to make its label look familiar.
- 02
Look for a built-in icon choice
Check the game’s input, interface or accessibility settings for a button-icon option. Some games let you pick a controller style; others choose it for you. Use the game’s own help if the option is unclear. Changing an icon set should be tested in both menus and play, since the two may behave differently.
- 03
Trace the input path
Note whether Steam Input or another mapper is active. Valve documents that gamepad emulation can present an Xbox pad to the game. The game can still support device-specific art if its developer has implemented it. So Xbox prompts alone do not prove that Steam failed to identify your real pad.
- 04
Try native support only if the game offers it
Save the working layout first. If the game documents support for your exact pad and connection, try its native setup with the extra mapper paused. For Steam, keep the change specific to this game. Restart and check input. Restore the saved setup if buttons stop working; removing the mapper cannot add support that the game lacks.
- 05
If prompts keep switching, check mouse and key input
Put the mouse still and test one pad button. Then move the stick or use gyro. If key prompts appear only with that action, inspect whether the layout sends mouse or keyboard input. Change one binding for a test. Keep any access feature you rely on, and use a fixed prompt setting if the game provides one.
- 06
Verify the final layout in a short play session
Check confirm, cancel, face buttons and any hold prompts. Write down the layout that worked. If the game has no suitable art, use its control screen to learn the mapping. A new cable or controller is not a useful first purchase when every action works and only the symbols differ.
Where to go next
If input works and the game offers no matching icon set, check its support notes. Prompt art depends on the game’s implementation.
Other tests for the same controller
Use these checks to separate a missing input from a label mismatch.
Variants of this symptom
The same underlying issue presents differently across controllers. These device-specific guides cover the variations.
mapping questions
The game may see an emulated Xbox pad, or it may only have Xbox-style art. Check its icon settings and supported input path before changing a working layout.
No. The game needs support for your pad and the relevant art. If native input does not work, restore Steam Input and check the game’s documented options.
The printed letter and the physical button position can follow different conventions. Test confirm and cancel, then inspect the layout. Choose the action you want instead of trusting the letter alone.
No. A tester reads input sent to the browser. It does not edit another program’s interface or add missing button art.
A stick or gyro binding may send mouse input. Check the layout and rule out an actual mouse movement. Some games switch prompts when they detect another input type.
No. Prompt choice is not an authenticity test. Use model information and the seller’s records to assess what you bought.
